2010 VOLUNTEER YEAR AWARDS

DAVID NIXON

FOR OUTSTANDING
WORK WHICH HAS
MADE A DISCERNIBLE
DIFFERENCE IN THE
LIFE OF THE CHURCH

In recognition of David’s valuable leadership in People’s Church’s Adult Religious Education Program and in honor of his establishment of the Fabulous First Friday Film Series in 2004, People’s Church is proud to present the David Nixon Film Series to the community. In keeping with David’s tradition of providing entertaining and educational films followed by thought provoking discussions, the Adult Religious Education Committee of seven now strives to accomplish what David single-handedly produced for years! He is deeply missed
but his contributions to our community live on and continue to enrich our lives.

LAST MARCH WE LOST DAVE NIXON, A BELOVED AND ACTIVE MEMBER OF OUR CHURCH. RECENTLY HIS ASHES WERE SET ADRIFT IN THE RIVER BEHIND HIS HOME IN A MOVING NATIVE AMERICAN CEREMONY. FAMILY AND FRIENDS WERE PRESENT AT THE BEAUTIFUL, SUNLIT SPOT AS THE CURRENT QUIETLY CARRIED HIS ASHES AWAY. DAVID WAS A GENTLE MAN WHO GRABBED HOLD OF LIFE, SEEMINGLY WANTING TO EXPERIENCE EVERYTHING. HE HAD WORKED AND TRAVELLED TO MANY PARTS OF THE WORLD BEFORE COMING TO LUDINGTON. DAVE WAS VERY ACTIVE IN OUR CHURCH, SERVING ON THE ADULT RE COMMITTEE; FOUNDING THE FABULOUS FIRST FRIDAY FILM FESTIVAL (NOW THE DAVID NIXON FILM SERIES); PREPARING HIS VERY POPULAR CHILI COLORADO #3 FOR TACOS AND TALENT NIGHTS; HOSTING AND ATTENDING CIRCLE DINNERS, TWO BITS-U, LOU YOCK’S CLASSES, BIDDING ENTHUSIASTICALLY AT SERVICE AUCTIONS; SINGING IN THE CHOIR; PARTICIPATING IN OPEN MIC NIGHTS; SERVING AT OUR NIGHTS FOR COMMUNITY TABLE; PARTICIPATING IN PEACE ACTIVITIES, AND COUNTLESS OTHERS.

HE IS MISSED.

"We Unitarian Universalists rely on our reason in matters of faith more than most religious people. We reject the absurd. We welcome the insights of science and reason, and we use tools of reason when we encounter mystery. What we don’t do, we UUs, is bludgeon and shame persons who advance theories of mystery. We use those tools gently and humbly in our own thinking, and even more gently and humbly when we are conversing with others. It is our belief that reason is joined by other core values, such as tolerance and delight in diversity. if we don’t use the tools of reason gently, especially in conversation with others, we will never grow in spirit or find the truth of mystery. It’s those realms that make our lives rich. "
- Rev. Christine Robinson in Faith and Reason (May 18, 2008)

People's Church Covenant

"We, the community of People's Church, uphold one another in our reverence and faith in the transcendent power of love, in our individual spiritual journeys, in our cultivation of compassion and understanding, in our stewardship of earth's blessings, and in our efforts to promote justice, equity, and peace in the world. We seek to forgive ourselves and others for our limitations, support one another in times of trouble, assume good intentions, and resolve issues with honesty, fairness, and respect. Together, we celebrate the sacred moments of life's passages and honor the holiness at the heart of being."
