FABULOUS FIRST FRIDAY FILM FESTIVAL August 1, 7 P.M.

Amazing Grace, a current tribute to William Wilberforce, a Christian humanist, the British Empire’s foremost abolitionist, will be shown at People’s Church on Friday, August 1st, at 7:00 pm. For a more than half a century, 1780 to 1833, Wilberforce led a campaign to abolish slavery. At that time, slavery in the British Empire was widely accepted as an economic necessity. Portrayals of scenes of political theater in the House of Commons are highly entertaining with their biting wit. In many ways, the story is an example of what faith-based politics can achieve. In his early years as a member of parliament, Wilberforce rented a pew at a Unitarian chapel in London. In later years, he became a Wesleyan. He surrounded himself with a circle of family and friends, a cross section of British leadership, mostly wealthy, members of parliament, ministers, scholars, abolitionists, Quakers, former slaves, poets and playwrights. They included John Newton, former slave ship captain who wrote the hymn, “Amazing Grace” and the family of Prime Minister William Pitt. Most important, Wilberforce never gave up.

Don’t miss the discussion that will follow the film. Snacks will be served. A $2 donation will be requested to cover costs.
